Did You Know?

Lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer, making up almost 25% of all cancer deaths – more than colorectal cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

  • Smoking is by far the largest contributing factor for lung cancer. People who smoke cigarettes are 15 to 30 times more likely to get lung cancer or die from lung cancer than people who do not smoke.
  • Cigarette smoking is linked to about 80% to 90% of lung cancer deaths.
  • About 10% to 20% of lung cancers happen in people who never smoked or smoked fewer than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime. These can be caused by secondhand smoke, radon, air pollution, a family history of lung cancer, and asbestos.
